Davis Double Dips At Dodge County
Kasson, MN (July 25)
By: Todd Narveson
Race fans that came out to the Dodge County Speedway got some bang for their buck. There were two make-up features to be taken care of tonight from the rain-soaked Thunderbird Open on July 14.
It was also Fan Appreciation Night with a plethora of prize giveaways and throw-outs to the crowd from Pepsi, KOWZ Radio, O'Reilley Auto Parts and Wix Filters. The top prizes were two pairs of tickets to the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the Iowa Speedway compliments of Fastenal in Rochester.
Eighty-eight cars signed in and it was also the AMSOIL Race Of Champions qualifier night for the WISSOTA AMSOIL Dirt Track Series competitors. Two drivers would score their first wins at Kasson, while several continued their domination.
After the WISSOTA Street Stocks ran their heats races, the make-up features were on deck. First up was the KM Telecom USRA B-Modifieds and ten cars answered the bell. Kylie Kath would take the lead and show the way to his first checkered flag after he fended off Brandon Hare. Hare spun and went to the tail but rebounded to finish third behind second place finisher Ben Moudry. Josh Gessell and Jacob Bleess finished out the top five.
The Images On Metal WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were up next for their make-up feature. Josh Crary led early on and then Dave Bjorge assumed the point. Brandon Davis did not take long to take over.
Davis was third on lap one and then got past Crary on lap two. Davis blew to the lead on lap three and screamed away from the pack. Davis took the win for his eighth at the track and sixth in a row. Billy Steinberg had a great run in second with Cody Gardner, Bjorge and Tyron Friese the top five.
After all of the preliminary heat race events were completed, things were set to get the features underway. The Rhodes Tax Service WISSOTA Street Stocks rolled on to the speedway for their 15-lap main event.
Dan Holland assumed the lead with national point leader Danny Hanson in tow. Tony Shaner got to third, but was under attack from Dan Bork. A caution came out for Mike Blowers who went up in smoke and that ended his night.
Hanson really increased the pressure on Holland when the race resumed. They went door-to-door for a couple of laps until Hanson took over on lap eight. From there, Hanson cruised to the win his seventh at Dodge County and the clean sweep too. Holland was second, Bork got to third with Shaner fourth and Nathan Schumacher fifth.
When the full moon rose up over turn two, you just wondered if things would turn ugly. They did for a bit when the USRA B-Modifieds arrived on the track for their feature. Ben Moudry took the early lead and the field went four wide for fourth. Jason Schlangen bolted to second and then challenged for the lead.
The leaders got into slower traffic on lap seven when Moudry got caught up by a spun car. Schlangen led on the restart while Moudry and Brandon Hare wrestled for second. Several more cautions ensued and it came down to a green, white, checkered dash to the finish.
Schlangen held on for his first win at Dodge County. Moudry survived another run in with a slower car for second. Hare finished in third with Greg Mattick and Kylie Kath in the top five.
If you thought that race was a mess, the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds tried their best to top it. Jerry Young took the lead early on, but Brandon Davis was again on a mission. Davis took the lead on lap three and then caution mania took over.
Davis led and then Young dove inside in turn three. Young ran out of room and spun and the caution waved. Young was sent to the tail on the restart. Several more yellows would ensue, the worst when Cody Gardner spun and Jared Boumeester piled into him and that collected Beau Lammers and Dave Bjorge.
At that point it ended up being another green, white, checkered run to the finish. Davis led the field to the checkered flag once again. Davis won his seventh in a row, which ties the all-time win streak record at Kasson. Paul Neisius was second and Tyron Friese scored another top five in third. Darryl Hainka was fourth and Young came back to fifth.
Dustin Nelson along with Harlan Morehart led the R&M Steel WISSOTA Super Stocks to the green flag. Nelson would take the lead, but the caution came out on lap two when Cole Queensland looped his car.
Nelson again took off on the start, while Jeff Brauer pushed up the track and that allowed Brett Dulas to shoot past into second. Brauer would regain his composure and found something on the top side and bolted back to second on lap six.
Brauer then went after Nelson and zoomed past on lap eight for the lead. Brauer would hang on through a couple of late cautions to take his second win at Kasson. Nelson finished second and Queensland rebounded back to third. Brett Dulas and Tony Bloom finished up the top five.
Tonight was the final night for track points in the Greenway Co-Op USRA Modifieds. Josh Angst led Steve Wetzstein by fifteen points when they rolled out for their feature race. Todd Scharkey bolted off of the front row to lead the early laps.
Wetzstein challenged Scharkey up front and made a strong move to the lead in turn three. The leaders stretched things out, but all eyes were on Jason Cummins. Cummins started twelfth and was on the top of the track and sliced through traffic. He was up to fourth when a caution came out with five laps to go.
Wetzstein would run away for his second win, while Cummins finished his charge in second. Scharkey was third and Angst was fourth. Angst's finish ended up being enough to win the title by two points. Doug Hillson was the fifth place finisher.
Casey Trom continued her domination of the Affordable Portable Junior Hornets when she won her seventh of the season. In a very wild Houston's Greenhouse Senior Hornet main event, Terry Blowers topped a three wide race for the lead on the last two laps.
The Dodge County Speedway will now sit idle through the month of August with no race programs on the schedule. The roar will return at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 5 when the USMTS Modifieds come to town for the "Kasson Klash".
That will be a part of the Casey's General Store Hunt For The National Championship and will also feature the make-up main event from the Thunderbird Open. All of the regular divisions will be in action for their final night of track points.
